The Fight Was Worth It

To the voters, volunteers, parents, students, and community leaders who supported my run for the Board of Education through mobilizations, donations, and the almost 50k votes, THANK YOU. Thank you for believing in our message and vision. And although we fell short, our movement for community building did not.
When I got into this race it was with the intention to continue to build on the movement that got us elected initially, one that is under attack by monied interest in San Francisco and across the country. This campaign represented a fight for equity and quality of education for all our students, with a heightened focus on those who have historically been left behind. We know many parents from those same communities have voiced they don’t feel heard and aren’t included in the decision-making around policies and procedures within the school district. It is in large part why I ran and is why I will continue this work.
My commitment has always been about advancing our community, about doing what’s right and about fighting for justice in our schools. Through the mobilizations, conversations, and witnessing new community members connecting with others, I feel content with the fact we achieved what we set out to do. It also excites me to see the work that will continue to grow from this.
I hope these efforts show people we will not be told where we can and cannot participate. If I can impart anything, it is that nothing is out of reach. We must pick ourselves up and keep going because our communities deserve us. Our advocacy does not stop, and will not stop here.

La pelea valió la pena
A los votantes, voluntarios, padres, estudiantes y líderes comunitarios que apoyaron mi candidatura a la Junta de Educación a través de movilizaciones, donaciones y los casi 50 mil votos, GRACIAS. Gracias por creer en nuestro mensaje y visión. Y aunque nos quedamos cortos, nuestro movimiento por la construcción de comunidades no.
Cuando entré en esta carrera fue con la intención de continuar construyendo sobre el movimiento que nos eligió inicialmente, uno que está siendo atacado por intereses monetarios en San Francisco y en todo el país. Esta campaña representó una lucha por la equidad y la calidad de la educación para todos nuestros estudiantes, con un mayor enfoque en aquellos que históricamente los han dejado atrás. Sabemos que muchos padres de esas mismas comunidades han expresado que no se sienten escuchados y que no están incluidos en la toma de decisiones sobre políticas y procedimientos dentro del distrito escolar. Es en gran parte por lo que me presenté y es por lo que continuaré este trabajo.
Mi compromiso siempre se ha centrado en el avance de nuestra comunidad, en hacer lo correcto y en luchar por la justicia en nuestras escuelas. A través de las movilizaciones, conversaciones y miembros de la comunidad conectándose con otros, me siento satisfecha con el hecho de que logramos lo que nos propusimos hacer. También me emociona ver el trabajo que seguirá creciendo a partir de esto.
Espero que estos esfuerzos muestren a las personas que no se nos dirá dónde podemos participar. Si puedo impartir algo, es que nada está fuera de alcance. Debemos levantarnos y seguir adelante porque nuestras comunidades nos merecen. Nuestra defensa no se detiene, y no se detendrá aquí.
