Reorganize, Regroup, Reengage

A clear message from supporters of what’s to come. As we sit with the results of last night’s Special Election, there is certainly much to reflect on. What brought us here and how we choose to respond to it is my main focus. There’s been an outpouring of love which signals how people are reacting and preparing for the next thing, and I am so grateful for the support we received throughout this time. What should be clear is this — this is not our story. This will not change where we come from, who we are, what we represent, what we have accomplished and what we will continue to do in service of others.

I want to apologize to the community of people who have been counting on us, and this board, to move forward the long standing issues within our education system. Throughout our term, and long before, we fought to advance positions, perspectives and voices who are often left out of these spaces. When I was sworn into office, I made promises that I spent my years of service fulfilling, and know there are many people who finally felt like they had a place on a decision making level. To you, who have been hurt, who have been harmed by our schools, who have been hoping to be included, I am sorry.

To those who felt like they got a win yesterday, I also apologize. I recognize the hurt and fear we were living through during the height of the pandemic and understand the emotions we were all holding. It’s unfortunate that those emotions were taken advantage of and led to an election costing taxpayers millions and the pouring in of funds from special interest groups. Regardless of our stances on specific issues, that should not circumvent our right to a democratic process.

For me, it has always been very simple. I stand by workers, students, teachers, people from low-income communities, monolingual families, first and always. People who have been waiting, often decades, for the changes that challenged adversaries’ core beliefs. I am proud to have not been shaken by the entitlement of a few and I will continue to work for the community who duly elected us to serve in 2018. The same folks who come from where I come from, and understand deeply my lived experiences with our education system, which inspired me to teach and motivated me to run. That will never change.

For the rest of us, we will dust ourselves off and keep going. This fight is certainly not over, and as many have said, this will not define my role in education. Nor does a high outcome for a low voter turnout define San Francisco. I am here to serve our district, and I will continue to work within our public schools, with our future teachers, and build connections within higher education to advance these positions. I will take my teacher, M.Ed, youngest Latina ever elected, 2-term President, PhD pursuing self to the next fight, and the next, and the next. Meanwhile, inspiring others who will be less and less afraid of these fear tactics, who will achieve more than I dreamed possible, to do the same. I say to you, keep your head up.

Reorganizar, reagrupar, volver a participar. Un mensaje de seguidores de lo que está por venir. Mientras nos sentamos con los resultados de la Elección Especial de anoche, ciertamente hay mucho sobre lo que reflexionar. Lo que nos trajo aquí y cómo elegimos responder a ello es mi enfoque principal. Ha habido una gran cantidad de amor que indica cómo la gente está reaccionando y preparándose para lo siguiente, y estoy muy agradecida por el apoyo que recibimos durante todo este tiempo. Lo que debería quedar claro es esto: esta no es nuestra historia. Esto no cambiará de dónde venimos, quiénes somos, qué representamos, qué hemos logrado y qué seguiremos haciendo al servicio de los demás.

Quiero disculparme con la comunidad de personas que han contado con nosotros y con esta junta para resolver los problemas dentro de nuestro sistema educativo. A lo largo de nuestro mandato, y mucho antes, luchamos por avanzar posiciones y voces que muchas veces quedan fuera de estos espacios. Cuando asumí el cargo, hice promesas que pasé mis años de servicio cumpliendo, y sé que hay muchas personas que finalmente sintieron que tenían un lugar en el nivel de tomar decisiones. A ustedes, que han sido heridos, que han sido perjudicados por nuestras escuelas, que esperaban ser incluidos, lo siento.

A aquellos que sintieron que ganaron ayer, también les pido disculpas. Reconozco el dolor y el miedo que estábamos viviendo durante la pandemia y entiendo las emociones que todos teníamos. Es desafortunado que se aprovecharán esas emociones y condujeran a una elección que costó millones a los contribuyentes y a la afluencia de fondos de grupos de intereses especiales. Independientemente de nuestras posiciones sobre temas específicos, eso no debe eludir nuestro derecho a un proceso democrático.

Para mí, siempre ha sido muy simple. Apoyo a los trabajadores, estudiantes, maestros, personas de comunidades de bajos recursos, familias monolingües, primero y siempre. Personas que han estado esperando, a menudo décadas, los cambios que desafiaron las creencias fundamentales de los adversarios. Estoy orgullosa de no haber sido sacudido por el derecho de unos pocos y continuaré trabajando para la comunidad que nos eligió debidamente para servir en 2018. Las mismas personas que vienen de donde vengo y entienden profundamente mis experiencias vividas con nuestro sistema educativo, que me inspiró a enseñar y me motivó a correr. Eso nunca cambiará.

Para el resto de nosotros, nos quitaremos el polvo y seguiremos adelante. Esta lucha ciertamente no ha terminado y, como muchos han dicho, esto no definirá mi papel en la educación. Un alto resultado para una baja participación electoral tampoco define a San Francisco. Estoy aquí para servir a nuestro distrito, y continuaré trabajando dentro de nuestras escuelas públicas, con nuestros futuros maestros, y construiré conexiones dentro de la educación superior para avanzar en estas posiciones. Llevaré a mi maestra, M.Ed, la latina más joven jamás elegida, presidenta de 2 mandatos, doctorado persiguiendo a sí misma a la próxima lucha, y la siguiente, y la siguiente. Mientras tanto, inspirando a otros que tendrán cada vez menos miedo a estas tácticas, que lograrán más de lo que soñé posible, a hacer lo mismo. Te digo, mantén la cabeza en alto.
