Jordan, this in no way undermines people’s experiences, and we as a board are ensuring support at all of our sites through different resolutions and budget priorities. As an actual teacher coming from the district I know the realities and I also know the many meaningful, intentional strategies coming from teachers and district staff to ensure the safety of our students that happen every single day across the city.
What we intend to highlight is the rhetoric being used that, whether intetional or not, associates “Lord of the Flies” behavior with students being “bussed in from other neighborhoods.” The tying of integration with “chaos” is inherently problematic to a specific group of students and it needs to be called out.
